Who we are
Greg, our knifemaker, grew up on a South Dakota farm, where hard work and resourcefulness shaped him. He hauled hay, fixed machinery, and learned to make tools last. After high school, he worked in a Wyoming natural gas plant before moving to Florida to train as a body tech. Those years of grit and skill honed Greg into an artisan. Now, as an ABS Apprentice, he takes pride in crafting his high carbon steel knives—sharp, durable, and built with American quality and craftsmanship for hunters, campers, or anyone who values a reliable blade.
Becky’s path was different but about just as driven. After years in office jobs, she chased a new dream, earning a Computer Science degree from UCF in 1996. She built a career at Motorola, rising from firmware programmer for first responder radios to managing a radio test team, traveling to China and Malaysia. But city life wasn’t her forever home. In 2016, they traded Fort Lauderdale’s hustle for the quiet of Pomona Park, where they had bought land years before. Here, Becky found her creative spark, crafting veg-tanned leather sheaths that pair perfectly with Greg’s knives. She also uses her computer skill to help GreBec Knives. As an example, she has built 2 websites for the company, you’re on one now!
How Greg Crafts the Knives
GreBec Knives offers a variety of custom high carbon steel knives. Greg personally designs and hand-crafts or forges each blade, whether its a hunting, camping, EDC, kitchen or historical knife. After profiling the knife, Greg heat treats and tempers it for durability. Post-heat treatment, he cleans off forge scale and grinds the final bevels. Once the bevels are complete, Greg electrochemically etches the company logo onto the blade. Knives crafted with Florida woods also feature the Florida logo.
At this stage, the knife awaits its handle. Greg rough shapes the handle scales, secures them with epoxy, and pins them for a solid bond. After attaching the handle, he finalizes its shape until it feels right to him. With the shape set, Greg hand sands the handle to perfection and polishes the wood, revealing a stunning custom knife. Becky inspects each knife, ensuring no scratches or blemishes. If she spots any, Greg refines the knife until it meets her standards.
Finally, Greg sharpens and tests the blade, ensuring it slices paper smoothly with a flawless edge. Satisfied, he hands it to Becky, who selects the perfect veg-tanned leather pattern, cuts it precisely, and applies custom dyes to complement the knife. After the dye dries, she glues and hand-stitches the sheath for durability, then burnishes the edges to a high luster, completing the masterpiece.
